The market is the social fabric
Our newspaper/packing sheet no. 1 was published on September 23, 2023 and told about the 400th anniversary of the Noordermarkt. The corona period has certainly had an impact on the market and we have had to say goodbye to a number of dear colleagues. Fortunately, we have been able to welcome many new colleagues. There had to be a sequel about the people who work at the market today and this newspaper/packaging sheet no. 2 is presented on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at the Noordermarkt.
About newspaper/wrapping sheet 1 and 2: ELIANE BEYER is a graphic designer at Joseph Plateau and worked out the idea together and on behalf of AKELEI HERTZBERGER. A long time ago, Akelei gave the design collective 'Joseph Plateau', of which Eliane - fresh from the Rietveld - was a member, a push in the right direction by promoting them at the then Dutch Architecture Institute. This resulted in nice, fun assignments and that has not stopped since then. Since then, they have continued to design mainly for the cultural sector. Books (small or large), flyers, posters, logos, crazy or non-profit projects and designs preferably for printing on paper. That is and remains the best. Just like these 2 versions of Noordermarkt newspaper/wrapping sheet. Such an old-fashioned large newspaper format is history, just like the 401-year-old Noordermarkt.
Eliane Beyer
A part of an interview with ELIANE BEYER: 'In addition to study assignments, we made posters, program sheets and a few other odds and ends for Desmet. People from the Rietveld pavilion who had exhibitions there came to us. One of them was AKELEI HERTZBERGER, who in turn introduced us to the NAi, the Netherlands Architecture Institute (now: Het Nieuwe Instituut), where she worked. That was our first, real serious assignment, the book Follies for the Floriade (1989). From that moment on, things started to roll slowly. Follies was printed at the Mart Spruijt printing company, where Freek Kuin worked, and he had taught theoretical education at the Rietveld. Kuin was the man of practice and knew everything about it. That's how everything ties together.' The entire Interview with Joseph Plateau from 2018.
On October 27, 2025, AMSTERDAM will be 750 YEARS old and we will celebrate this for a year. Together with all the inhabitants of Amsterdam and everyone who cares about the city. It is about connecting people and that is mainly what this newspaper/packing sheet no. 2 is about. At night and in bad weather and in all kinds of weather, the market entrepreneurs set up their stall. It is getting up very early and working hard, but the contact with each other, regular customers, tourists from home and abroad and a nice sale make up for a lot.
We introduce ourselves to you to give you an insight into what goes on behind the market trader and what drives them to be on the market. Not everyone is mentioned in this newspaper, but an inspiring book about the Noordermarkt is coming out. More information about the content of the book Streetwise. Look for more info about the Noordermarkt on Present and future of the Noordermarkt.
